Ilana Hayutin - Artist's Statement
My name is Ilana Hayutin, and I am an artist. I started making visual art when I was four years old, attending drawing classes in Colorado. My creations were whimsical, carefree, and courageously colorful with the imagination only young children can curate.
Highschool was marked by an era of illustrating faces of musical figures of the 1960s. As a part of me obsessed over scholastic pursuits, a countercultural fascination emerged in parallel. I used primarily charcoal and colored pencils to represent the duality of sociopolitical unrest, and the expressive freedom and connection music can offer.
This marriage of music and visual art continued through college in Denver, where I partnered with local DJs to visualize their album art covers. I transitioned to acrylic paint, a more fluid and forgiving medium, and I explored fantastical themes like underwater sea creatures engaging in human shenanigans and Alice-and-wonderland-like dreamscapes.
A few years after college, I moved to California to begin a doctorate in clinical psychology. This geographic change invited a higher degree of sophistication into my work, marked by minimalism, single line compositions, and full-body representations of the human form. Moved by my coursework and the discovery of contact improvisation dance, I played with watercolors and developed a series of pieces focused on mindfulness meditation.
The final push of my graduate program landed me in Massachusetts, and here I debut the many eras and continuous evolution of my work. Thank you for contributing to the journey.
